Santa Cruz County enjoys weather that is generally well-suited for walking and bicycling, a bus system (supported, in part, since 1978 with a 1/2-cent local sales tax) that has one of the highest per capita riderships of any community its size in the U.S., and community-wide interest in making investments to ensure livability of the area. In 1999, the Commission adopted a blueprint for future transportation investments that including HOT-Bus lanes, a Bus Rapid Transit system, and significant upgrades to bicycle and pedestrian facilities. In 2002, the Commission decided to postpone further consideration of the challenges involved with HOT Lanes and focus first on the challenge of funding and implementing capacity improvements on Highway 1 with the idea that any HOV capacity added could be converted to HOT at a future date. The discussions and resources on this site are designed to keep community members up-to-date on relevant developments in these areas and to provide a venue for public discussion to help bring out the best in these projects. |
